I had DX version 8.1 installed, but in DX's
analysis page, there were many files reported to be missing, and the recommend
was install a newer version of DirectX.

Which I did, and it took hours for it to get installed. All to no avail, and now, NO SOUND.

When I go to Device Manager, Crystal Audio Codec and MPU-401 Compatible Midi Device have the yellow triangle/exclamation point
over them.

I removed both devices from Device Manager, restarted the pc, and things were going right along where the pc said it found new devices and was now installing them.....but all to no avail.

This really scrapes my bottom. This 9.0 DX download came right from Windows Update.

So, friends, has anyone else come across this? And what do I do now? Running Windows ME.

Upon furthur investigation within Device Manager, this notice for both devices above
said: NTKERN.VXD, MMDEVLDR.VXD device loader
could not load the device driver (Code 2).

Thanks all,
Chip

Chip,

Hey buddy, it sounds like your old audio drivers are not compatible with DirectX V9.0

Is your PC a Dell? Dell uses that Crystal Audio for almost all of their stuff. Anyway, most PC manufacturers will let you search their support site by entering the S/N of your PC model. This way it will display all of the drivers and software that came with your machine. It will also list the new drivers available.

My recommendation, go to a website and find the updated drivers for the Crystal Audio device and you will be fine. If you tell me your Computer model I might be able to help you!

Thanks,
Mark

Thanks Mark.
What I did last night, after I sent this thread, was to use the RESTORE TO A LATER DATE
option within HELP. I got the pc back and the sound is working; but, now, email and getting online DOESN'T work.(I'm typing this from my other pc [Windows98])

The Windows ME pc is an HP Pavilion #6746C.
System # P2908A; Serial # KR03942399.

In email I checked all the settings within ACCOUNTS/PROPERTIES and they all are as they should be.

I'll try to check out about update drivers.
Would COMCAST [IP cable] be able to figure out the internet accessing problem? The problem, tho, is not on their end, as the pc I'm on now is able to get email and go online.

Thanks again Mark, for your assistance.
