Annoying scratches

If you own a Fender Dual Professional or Custom, you know there is no cut-away along the fretboards. Do you get some scratches from your finger picks in the area just behind the pick-ups?

Has anyone made pick guards and applied them to this area? If so, what material did you use and how did you apply it?
