This seems to be an intermittant problem, but I sure would like to find out what's causing it. I have had this problem in the past and couldn't even Ghost my system due to the lockups, however for the past couple of months it was working fine, so it seems to come and go.

I tried copying some CD's yesterday with Roxio CD Creater 5.x. Every CD burned fine, but at the very end, after the CD was closed, but before I got the Okay button, my whole system locked up.

I upgraded to the newest 5.3.x Roxio and 2000 SP3 and it still happened. The first time I ran the data and music transfer tests in CD Creater, my system blue-screened with an exception in ntoskernel.dll.

After all this, my system still locks up at the very end of the burning process. Anyone have any prior experience with this or any ideas?

Jim,

Yeah, I have always had issue's with Roxio and Windows 2000. The Roxio website recommends that Windows 2000 customers do a custom install and DO NOT install the "Direct CD" product from the Roxio Suite. They also have specific instructions on the order of install with the product and the Roxio service packs. It may be worth uninstalling the Roxio product and do the custom and then install the service packs from the Roxio website.

I have moved to a product called "Nero" it is made by a German software company. I really enjoy it as far as a burning software application goes. Here is their website... http://www.nero.com

I think the Direct CD issue with W2K was resolved with version 5. What's odd is that my computer will burn fine for a while, then this problem starts happening for a while, then it goes away on its own.

Jim,
Nero is WONDERFUL, believe me.

I had similar problems, particularly with earlier versions of CD Creator. Adaptec/Roxio love to re-engineer standard files. e.g., it would overwrite CDRALVSD.VXD with its own version that optimized its performance, but caused conflicts with other software and hardware. I've seen this problem mostly with 98SE, but similar symptoms occurred on Me and Win2K machines. In Win98, the system would hang at shutdown with a blue screen for a CDRALVSD conflict. Cold shutdown with the power button was required to shut down or restart.

Since reformatting the system drive, reinstalling the OS and software -- OMITTING the Roxio stuff -- the problems have not resurfaced. Also, on my Win98 machine, I just uninstalled Roxio (thoroughly, all the way down to the registry -- removing all keys) and installed NERO. Most of the problems, including the shutdown glitches, went away. It's running like a champ now.

I am always cautious of Adaptec/Roxio CD software. It does not always work and play well with others.

I've also had mixed results with Roxio/Adaptec software. Adaptec CD Creator "Standard" V3 came with my CD writer many moons ago, and sometimes it would work, sometimes it would hang, but it absolutely couldn't deal with 80 minute CDRs. Next I tried Nero, and had similar results. So I spent bucks on Roxio CD Creator Platinum V5 and guess what? Still flakey. It would work sometimes, but not reliably.

I read on a CD-writer-related web site (http://www.cdrfaq.org/) that there were updates on the Roxio site, so I went there and downloaded updates for both V3 and V5. The V3 updates applied fine, but the V5 update complained with a message saying "The update has been cancelled. No qualified Roxio product can be detected".

The surprising thing was the V3 was now V3.5c and it seems to work flawlessly. That's what I use for CD writing. But I've kept Roxio V5 on my system because it seems to work well at digitizing LPs and cassettes.

I suspect that whether Adaptec/Roxio software works on your system has a lot to do with what version of Windows you're running, what kind of processor, mother board, sound card, what kind of CD writer, how fast your processor runs, what Windows service packs you've installed, etc., etc., etc. I sense that they only test their software on certain platforms, and when it runs on those, they release it. As Larry indicated above, they have no qualms about replacing system files (like DLLs and VXDs) that might be used by other apps. That practice is not uncommon in the Windows world, and it leaves much to be desired.
