Sharing Files Through an Ethernet Hub

Guys,

Follow up to my earlier topic of transferring files from my old box to the new one…

My old system is WIN 95 and the new one is XP Professional.

I’ve followed procedure that Mark linked us to awhile back on another thread; LINK. However, I am using a hub instead of the CAT 5 crossover cable; could go with the crossover cable since it's only 2 computers.

Things seem to be set for sharing as configured. Each computer can access the Internet but can see only itself in the workgroup (displaying network places/ entire network) I’ve set up. I’ve tried disabling the firewall software on both ends; after disconnecting the Internet connection to the cable modem.

XP Pro provides a setup wizard for this that you can run on non-XP systems, but only the WIN 98 vintage and later. Near as I can tell it doesn't do anything more than the procedure linked above.

Any ideas?

Note: I’m not at home so I can’t experiment with any ideas until this evening.

Ron,

Make sure that both computers are part of the same "Workgroup". You can probably only see the computer you are on, because you are only in that "Workgroup". In WindowsXP, try doing a Search for Computers and type in the name of the other box. It should find it right away, even if they are not in the same workgroup.

The othere reason these two computers may not see each other is the default networking protocals are different. Make sure both are using netbui (microsoft's preferred method of matching names with numeric computer addresses) or have access to an alternate naming service such as Binds.

Well, as usual, my case doesn't go by the book. I still can't get the two boxes to recongize one another through network neighborhood, but I am transferring my files.

I couldn't even get a ping to work from the Win 95 box until shutdown ZoneAlarm. Once I did that I was able to ping and also able to connect from the new box to the old box by running "\\(IP Address). It prompted me for the sharing password and I'm off and running. I'm not sure what the mix up was, but I'm and engineer and always game for a work-around.

Mark, I'll e-mail you my winipcfg details from the 95 box later. Maybe that will tell you something about my configuration.
