Hi John,

Cookies are files that are placed on your drive when you access certain websites. They are indentification files used by the site to 'recognize' your PC when you log on. That's how the Steel Guitar Forum knows which categories have new entries since your last visit.

Java is a language that instructs your browser to execute 'applets' or mini-programs that are 'server side' or embedded in the web page itself, not run on your PC. It's commonly used for graphic objects and selection objects.

Also, Java is not to be confused with JavaScript, an entirely different computer language used on some web pages. The only similarity between them is the name.

The Forum index pages use a small amount of JavaScript for the cookie function. The Forum doesn't use Java at all.

Here's some more info about Java:

Java applets run on your computer in the "Java Virtual Machine" (JVM). A big bru-ha-ha between Microsoft and Sun developed when Microsoft changed some aspects of the JVM without Sun's permission (Sun owns Java). Microsoft stopped shipping the JVM as part of Windows or Internet Explorer. This was tragic, in my opinion, because Java is the most secure environment for running untrusted code. You never hear of a "Java virus" for that reason.

Now, several years later, Microsoft is launching something they call ".NET". In .NET, code written in multiple languages can be easily moved around the Internet and executed on Windows machines. I predict a wide variety of .NET-based viruses in the months ahead. All of this could have been avoided if Microsoft had stayed with Sun's original Java vision and played by the rules.

That's just my opinion, anyway.

Cookies: They're good with milk.
Java: To dip hard cookies into.

As far as they relate to computers and the internet, they're both headaches.

I agree with b0b on this one, too. .NET is going to cause a whole new set of viruses and related problems. As if Java wasn't hard enough...
