Hi--
I'm upgrading an old Pentium 1 Sony VA10
computer with a 128mb edo DIMM memory module
from this page. They come in 2 flavors
though: "Buff" and non-Buff". http://www.chipmerchant.com/memory-dimms-edo.html

Any thoughts on which I'd need? Also if 128mb is reasonable. I want to set-up a CD burning capability. Could get 2 128 modules.
(New TDK burner/nero/Win98)
Would prefer to buy it used, but I'm not sure where. thanks! Joel

You better check, but 128Mb seems like it may be max for an old P1. Many would not even take that much. Also a lot of the older machines required memory in pairs (two memory modules).

Also remember that certain motherboards can take some set maximum of processor speed and memory. Putting more than the maximum won't help you, and it might hurt your computer.

Thanks for the tips! One of the people who
looked at it mentioned 2 x 128, so the dual memory requirement rings a bell. I'm on the fence about buying a new computer. Merely upgrading to win98 and adding memory (etc.)
comes pretty close to half the price of a new PC. yet my old one seems to work fine.
May post again about buying one...
thanks again, Joel

Go to http://www.crucial.com and use their tools. You enter your computer brand and/or motherboard model and it will give you all the information about what kind of memory it will take and I believe also gives the maximum. Their prices are among the best too.

The Crucial site is, indeed, very helpful and their memory modules would probably be good. The prices seem rather high, though.

Not too long ago, I was upgrading a friend's machine and, among other things wanted to add memory. His computer was about the same vintage as the Sony VA10 and required 72 pin simm's. I got 64MB off eBay for $30 and all was fine. (He's been running it more than 2 month's, now.)

A few days after the eBay thing, I got an email from some other outfit saying they'd noticed my purchase and would have sold me the same thing for $10. I've been intending to try them out but haven't yet done so. I can dig their name out of my notes if anyone is interested. --Everett
