Most Compaq's access the BIOS with F10. When it first boots up and you get the flashing cursor in the upper RIGHT corner hit F10 and it will bring up the BIOS. Many do auto detect changes. e.g. my 5170 detected additional memory, a different hard drive and an added CD Burner.

Before you make any changes, go to the Compaq download site and check for any SoftPaq updates either for the system or BIOS and update your machine.
