I have a Compaq Presario #5461 that is giving me fits. At will, sometimes daily, sometime every few minutes, sometimes over several days the computer just shuts off. Has anyone else ran into this? |

It sounds like it could be a heat problem. I have a Presario 5170 and don't recall any shut offs with it.
Check the cooling fan in the back to make sure it's working and that it's clean. Dust can clog up the fan. Also, where the machine is sitting can be a problem. Make sure it's in a spot that it can get good airflow. Many of the newer computer desks have a special compartment for the CPU with a front door. If you use one of these, make sure the door is open and that the back is also open or has a large opening for air.
You may want to remove the case and CAREFULLY clean out any dirt/dust accumulation inside. If yours has a separate CPU cooling fan, make sure it is working.
Make sure it's not the AC power that is causing it and also if you have a power strip, make sure that it is good (bypass the power strip to see if that fixes the problem).
If it's still in warranty, after checking the above, call Compaq service. If it's no longer in warranty, check for a Compaq authorized service center. If the power supply is bad, it has to have a Compaq exact replacement power supply - a generic will not work, because of the Compaq specific power connectors (Compaq does not use the clone/generic type power connectors) and possibly because of the mounting. |
