Hello,

I'm starting to get the urge to have an old National Tricone squareneck (Style 1 is the thing to get, I believe?), and I'm wondering where one looks for these things. I've read that they show up on ebay from time to time, are there any other reliable retailers to contact? What about books for these guitars?

Thanks!

- Andrew

You can find them through the Guitar Base web site, which lists a whole bunch of dealers worldwide. The definitive book on Nationals is the one by Bob Brozman entitled "The History and Artistry of National Resonator Instruments", published by Centerstream Press, ISBN: 0931759706.

There were two National Squarenecks in the "Buy and Sell" section recently. They appear to still be available.

A 1927 Style 2: http://steelguitarforum.com/Forum3/HTML/013426.html

And a 1929 Style 1: http://steelguitarforum.com/Forum3/HTML/014068.html

They do show up on eBay fairly regularly, maybe one a week, although I haven't seen a lot lately. I find them by searching for "national" in the Guitar category.

Hi Andrew:

No doubt it's great to have the "real thing", but I want to add that I think the National Reso-Phonic company is putting out guitars that sound just as amazing.
You can call them at (805)-546-8442, check out website at www.nationalguitars.com

I have an original Style One tri-cone and love it, but if I was looking around at the moment, I'd definately be looking into these folks' product.

The only bummer w/ a NEW National Square is 1) they have wooden necks as opposed to the old hollow steel, 2)body shape is different and 3) body metal is different...and I've tryed both..and there is a difference...even Cindy admits she's got an original...and if you really dig deep, get a pre-29...John Dopyera was still doing quality control till he left in early '29.
