All of a sudden, places that I go to on the web that require password/username are not
saving/remembering.

Before, I would go to the site and the P/U
flag would quickly pop-up, disappear, and open up the site.

What should I do folks? This problem is really a nuisance.

Thanks all, in advance.

Looks like you have cleaned out your "Temporary Internet files" folder or the "cookies" folder from your computer.

This will cause the effect you have for a while.

Thanks Bill...
Come to think of it, I did a 'defrag'
and 'disk' cleanup about 2 weeks ago, and
curiously, this is about the time frame when
I noticed this problem.

Also, a friend of mine, who is a pc programmer, just mentioned that this same thing was happening to him.

He thinks, maybe, that many websites are now tightening there belts a little more, and just simply want it so you have to go thru the 'logon' motions. Just a speculation.

Those passwords are either inside of a cookie, which is in 'Temperary Internet Files', but usually just one sight would be affected. Highly unusual that more than one would be corrupt at the same time, unless you had a pending problem on the hard drive ( run scandisk to check for bad blocks )

Usually this problem is your *.PWL file (Password List file) That's where internet and log in passwords are stored. You'll find it in the c:\windows directory, and the name will be the same as your login to windows name, with the extention PWL. Like, if I logged in as Tom, the file would be Tom.PWL...If in doubt, delete or rename all the *.PWL files, and reboot. It will prompt you to re-enter your password for logging into windows. If you dont want a password, just enter nothing, and enter nothing again when asked to confirm. It wont ask you anymore.

That file is always open when windows is running, and can easily get corrupt if windows crashes, or the power goes out.. Things like that. You may also see some errors, like Illegal operation's, when accessing certain sights.

Not sure this will help you, but is worth a try...

Good luck

Thanks Tom,
Why not. Your solution sounds like that
could be the problem. I'll give it a shot.

Tom,
I could not access c:\windows directory.
Couldn't even find it. Did locate, however,
some PWL files and they were listed as 'opening with' MS Word Processor.

But when I tried to open the 'default.pwl'
[and some others], MSWord popped up, but an
error flag said it couldn't open the files.

I also ran 'scandisk' and there were many errors found, that were automatically fixed, but that didn't seem to help either.

I did a lot of different file searches, but mostly kept coming up with 100's of files found.

I'm having a similar problem, but only with the forum. If I reply to a post the computer has my password stored, but if I try to start a thread, the password doesn't come up. This is problem because I don't remember my password, and the email address I used to have when I registered is long definct.

Ooops. Looks like it must have been a cookie that I deleted, password is back now

I did not read this thread before replying to the other. This information here is quite revealing because i have gone through a fresh install of windows and i believe the password prompt was interfering with my trying to load programs when "restarting" the computer. I was trying to figure out why it keeps asking me for a password at start when i previously hit cancel. I will now try entering nothing a password to get rid of that box. This is a great tip. Thanks.

An added note here.....

If you have the "cookies" flag turned off in your Internet Broswer,(MS Explorer 5.0 for example) it will cause loss of passwords and other errors. Some web-sites wont even let you continue because the "cookies" is turned off. The MP3.Com site is one of these, along with the Microsoft.com.

I,personally, keep the "cookies" flag off because when it is on, I wind up getting all kinds of "Spam" mail and promos for latest gaget/whisbang toy.

Bill, I'm curious as to how you have determined Internet Explorer cookies relates to e-mail of any kind. The e-mail program, such as Outlook/Outlook express, are separate from the browser. There is nothing in the browswer to identify your e-mail address.

I get very little spam to my regular e-mail address. I have a hotmail account and get lots of spam (mostly spam) to that account, but I use that e-mail address on any software I register or anyplace I must give an e-mail address.
