Audio CDR's on PC?

I just received some Audio CDR's and they don't play on my Toshiba XM-6201TA 24X Reader. They play fine on my Maxtor PlexWriter 12/10/32 burner and my home stereo CD player. Is my reader too old and/or is there software or a firmware upgrade to enable reading Audio CDR's?

Jim, it could be the CD Reader. Some readers will not support all the various CD formats. I would think it should support audio CDR's but....

I had problems with the OEM 32X CD Reader in my Compaq. It wouldn't read a styles CD I got from PG Music (BIAB) and they wound up giving me a downlad ftp to get it. The tech told me they run across CD readers occasionaly that are incompatible.

I didn't think much about it until I got a CD Burner and found out the CD Reader would not read some of the data CD's that were made with my burner. I then found out the Compaq OEM reader only had a DAE (Digital Audio Extraction) rate of less than 1 (.43) when ripping from audio CD's. That did it, I bought a new CD reader and it is compatible with everything (that is available now) and has a 16X test DAE speed (actually I've got as high as 20X DAE).

This may be an option for you too, as CD readers are relatively inexpensive. The unit I bought is an ASUS 50X, model CDS500, it is NT compatible too. It was $39.95 through Egghead.com

Had a similar problem where my CD-ROM drive would not play CD-Rs I burned on my own computer. Had to upgrade the CD-ROM to a newer one. Didn't cost that much and has solved the problem. Planned obsolescence, I believe it's called.

Oh, I should add that my new CD-ROM doesn't play all the CD-Rs I get from other people either! Like I can't play Earl Erb's CD-R on my computer, or Jeff Newman's recent rhythm tracks. Frustrating.
