I 'm looking for a small scale light weight 8-string acoustic / reso lap guitar for travel and practice. I've never seen one and don't know if such a thing even exists! I've been told there are structural issues with hollow bodies and 8 strings especially at small sizes, but - they make mandolins, don't they?

Might try contacting Paul Beard Guitars for an 8 string version of the Road A Phonic. That guitar is based on resonator mandolin components.

Howard- thanks, I actually did speak to Paul; he said the 8th string won't fit the palm rest - for that and other reasons he is a proponent of 7 strings; something I might consider.

Drop a message to Carrol Benoit at www.benoitguitars.com

He builds great resophonic guitars 6 and 8 string.

I talked to Paul Beard about 8 strings and he said it was his experience that the more strings, the less 'resonant' the tone. He said he was thinking about making a 5 string to see if that sounded even better than a 6 string.
