Jody
There's something I've been meaning to ask – in all your posts, I don't remember seeing (and apologies to you if it's there somewhere) any explanation of HOW you came to start playing the steel guitar. Doesn't seem like an obvious career path for a nice boy from New York. I mean, when all your schoolmates were listening to the Beatles and the Grateful Dead how did you get into the kind of music you play? via Hawaiian music?
Also, did you have a "musical education", i.e. theory etc, or are you self-taught? and did you start out on steel or you play any other instruments? piano? guitar?
Like they say, inquiring minds want to know... whenever you have the time.
Nick
(and yes, this IS a blatant and obvious attempt to keep you posting on the Forum )

.... "I mean, when all your schoolmates were listening to the Beatles and the Grateful Dead how did you get into the kind of music you play? via Hawaiian music?".....
********************************************
Presuming my friend Jody went to school during the same era as I did, the above mentioned artists were unknown. Even Elvis was unknown. My schoolmates were listening to jazz, George Shearing, Glenn Miller and a host of big bands....and the popular teen dance was the boogie woogie. Western Swing was also coming upon the scene at that time. Hawaiian music (believe it or not) could be heard in juke boxes everywhere. Jody has been married to Marilyn for 48 years, myself to Mary 50 years. Therefore, it can be safely presumed we attended school during the same era of great music.

Nick you are a wise guy, read what my mentor Keoki posted,,,he has the answers,,

I have the right to remain silent
Anything and Everything I say can and will be
used against me in a court of law.

I have the right to consult with my attorney,if I have no legal representation,,
An attorney will be provided for my defense by the court.

I take the "fifth" amendment,,I have said much too much already. Case closed. Judge
Lake will preside over the court.

From what I understand, you HAVE to consult with an attorney before you post, these days...
Take a tip from Paul Newman... his salad dressing company has the slogan "All we need to shred is lettuce"
Keep smiling, Jody !!!
All the best

Anybody know Jody's home address.......?

Those who know me....realize I'm a peace loving, non-violent kind a guy but I've been pushed to the limit at this writing. Anger management classes can't even control me at his point.

Jody makes me so upset sometimes......I'm now ready (after more than a year of waiting) to personally go over and kick his back side!

Anyone wanna go with me? I'll give you first shot and I'll be right there behind you!

WHAT is this Forum to do in Jody's threatened absence? He has so much valuable, factual knowledge about the industry and music in general.........like the in-house historian..... WHO? is gonna fill his shoes? (there ought to be a song wrote about that!)

Anyway.........Jody needs a pep-talk. Let's don't lose this guy. WIthout him, it'll be much like showing up for a gig and discovering at show time, that you left your bar (slide) and picks at home.

Some of his antics truly confuse me.

Skip, e-mail me and I'll give you, (and ONLY you), his snail address....(others need not apply)....I wouldn't dare put it on the Forum...too many have nothing better to do than to make life miserable for this great guy at a time when he needs all the support from friends he can get. He is a walking "steel guitar history book". One of the top steel guitar legends whom I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. I agree with you, we, as steel guitarists cannot afford to lose him. However we must show courtesy and the decency to allow him the opportunity to surmount his present crises by giving him our prayers and all our support....he deserves it.

Yah, I can't tell you of how many times I have arrived at a gig with no picks, bar and/or cable. Believe it or not, one time I actually showed up with an empty case!

George has got it right! That's the way it was in the old days.

George Shearing, Glen Miller, Big Band stuff , Swing and Jazz . Western swing just coming on, which Jody was fantastic on.

And hawaiian music was stil very popular and we all played it too, before pedals.

A little off-topic, but you guys (especially Jody) might know the answer to my question: Did Leo Fender ever visit Hawaii? Quite a few of the endorsers in the early catalogs, and Freddy Tavares, were Hawaiian.
Just curious?

Aloha Jody, I'm glad Leo made it over to the islands at least once. From what I've read he appreciated hawaiian music. I hope he got to see and hear some steel guitar over there.

And all of you,,I will be going off line at the end of this month. Circumstances dictate that is my only option at this time. I had a great run and now its time to move on and "bug" others..besides I have a book to finish.

My best to all of you,,you too Ray,,you devil
you. I will be back when I buy another PC..Im giving this to my grandson for his first year of college,,all of you are fine people,,,will miss the fun..but everything comes to an end....except a "frankfurter" it has (2) ends...be well.

Jody. If I sell those 2 speakers in "Buy& Sell" I can save up for another PC..goodbye again.
