Has anyone here heard or played the Beard Road-O-Phonic resonator? Is this guitar a viable instrument for stage and studio? It looks like it would be a great live instrument, especially in situations where the band volume is louder than usual.
Are they completely hollow, or semi-hollow(chambered)?
Also, what's the tone like?
Thanks.

Todd..
I've only played one acoustically. Sounds surprisingly good for such a small resonator (not sure of internal structure). A bit funky though
To clarify..I don't own one. Just had a chance to play one.

I own one. It is a very convenient travel resonator. It's easy to just pick it up and go. Play it unplugged or plugged in.
Acoustically, it does not have the full sound, volume or tone of a full size resophonic guitar. Plugged in, it does not have the sustain of an electric. I would imagine that there might be a sustain effects box that would enhance it.
For a professional gig or studio job I don't think that this would cut it. It is also advertised as a travel guitar for practice and that is it's purpose. For what it is intended for, it is a high quality instrument.
I have taken it to a bar gig where I sit in with an acoustic guitarist for several tunes and it's fine for that. I play it plugged in.
It's also good to have as a back up. I had a situation where my pick up was acting up on my Dobro. Luckily, I had the road o phonic and it saved the day. Hope this helps. |
