Does the string spacing determine which size bar would be best to use for slants?

It certainly does if you're going to use the tip of a bullet bar to make split chords. A wide bar won't work well for a narrow spacing, and vice versa.

Otherwise, I'd think it's more a question of the right weight to get a good sound with your set-up, and a diameter that feels comfortable to hold.

We always used skinny bars in the old days, when you had to play those slants. More accurate.....al
