I posted one of my jazz steel files in the "events and announcements" section, and was wondering if any of you have done much mp3 encoding.

The file I posted is a three minute stereo Mp3 file that is 3.5 MB in size after encoding at a bitrate of 160k. I'd like to get the file size down a little smaller. I have tried lower bitrate, but even 128k sounds bad, with artifacts that resemble flutter on a tape recorder.

160k sounds pretty good, but I'm wondering about variable bitrate enecoding. Do all Mp3 players support variable bitrate? Are all Mp3 encoders equal in performance?

Here's the file I posted in the other forum:

Try knocking down your sample rate before doing the encoding. If your sample rate is 11kHz you'll lose a bit of high end, but that high end is where the most annoying MP3 artifacts occur.

Also, mixing to mono before encoding will knock the file size in half. It's a bit trickier to mix, but good mono beats warbly stereo!
