The Mc Intyre feather pick up for "Dobro" is a silicone pick up (I believe),that adheres to the underside of the cone. Question: Will that affect the unamplified acoustic sound in any way? |

Howard, I have a feather. It hasn't had much time on my reso- I bought it to test my other instruments. It is a piezo film, with double sided tape on one side and vinyl on the other. It is very light and doesn't take up a lot of area, so I doubt that it would affect the acoustic sound much. It also doesn't have much of the "quack attack" associated with other piezo elements,
Since it is so location specific, where you place it on the cone would likey affect the tone quite a bit, given the many different vibrational mode shapes that go through a cone. One thing I also noticed about the feather is that most of the output from the pickup comes from the edges of the feather, not the middle. Proper adhesion is important.
I hope that this helps.

Hi Howard..
I just made some modifications to my Regal RD-35 which included a new Quarterman cone, Tut Taylor spider, an ebony tipped bridge and the installation of the McIntyre Feather pickup. Except for the pickup the mods made a world of difference in the tone, quality of sound and volume from the guitar. But I've been disappointed in the pickup situation. Prior to installing this pickup I was using an Audio Techna sax mic fastened to the cover plate. I'm still using it because the pickup doesn't seem to give me anywhere near the quality of sound. I've tried a couple of preamps into three different steel amps with no success. However, the most recent amp I tried was Peaveys Ecoustic 112. That has provided the best response (without a preamp). In experimenting a bit though I've found that a magnetic type p/u i.e. an old Bill Lawrence unit gave me as good reproduction of sound as the mic did. So now I'm looking at putting on a new Don Lace dobro pickup. Good luck.
Best wishes.
Clay

Most folks I know who've tried the Feather weren't happy. A pre-amp is essential, and even then, the tone is weak, at least to me. I have the old style McIntyre pickup in my Guernsey, play through a Crate amp, and get a pretty good tone! Almost like nothing at all! |
