I have a Lawrence 705 that I would like to intall in my Williams PSG. Can anyone advise the pickup wire color codes and how to wire this animal?

There isn't any "polarity" but wire the white wire to the "hot" side and the black to ground. That's the way they were wired in my Franklin when I got it new.

Are you sure it's a 705? The 705's I had and now the 710's only have two wires.

Are you even sure it's a Lawrence?

On some of the 705's, there were 4 wires to enable you to use one or both blades controlled by a switch. If memory serves me correctly, they should be black & red wires. You can tie both of the same colors together with the red being the hot and the black being considered the ground. If there is a ground wire as well it can be wired with the black wires. The hot(s) should be connected to the outside prong on the jack to make a connection with the tip of the 1/4 plug. The ground(s) should be connected to the other prong that will make a ground with the inside sleeve of the jack when it is plugged in. Hope this helps!

This topic has been around before. I had two different sets of the L-705's. The very first set I got was new and one pickup had red and black wires, and the other had a single conductor shielded wire. Yes, they came that way in the box from Lawrence - I still have these pickups and the boxes.

The second set of 705's, which I got used and have since sold to a Forumite, had 4 wires. I believe there were black, red, green, and white. I asked the Forum the same question them about how to hook them up and got several answers. Surely, someone at Lawrence Co. could find out for us???

Thanks guys...that makes sense. I'll get out the ohm meter and try to figure out which is which. I bought the PU used at the St. Louis show. I shot off an e-mail to Lawrence but got no reply.

Jim you are correct about the color wiring. I just couldn't remember for sure.

Dale, if you use the ohm meter you will figure it out. Each blade will read about 10K DC ohms. When you get the correct wiring with both blades working it will read around 20K DC ohms or slightly higher. I have had a couple of these 705's, but just didn't recall the exact color of the wires. Those particular wires are very thin also, so use a great deal care when soldering them and do not pull them to tight. Easy to ruin a perfectly good pickup like that. I speak from experience!

That's interesting on the optional dual coil wiring. Never saw one of those, and I've spent a lot of time with Bill Lawrence when he would go to St Louis.

These have to be custom models as they were never listed in his brochure or web site.

Hey guys...I checked my PU. It has a red, black, white, green, and shield wire. I get 10K from red to white, and from black to green. Thanks for the info.
