Bobbe,

What was the name/model of the fuzz/distortion unit you said you wouldn't be caught dead without? It was in an EFFECTS post, and you named four other devices as well as the "fuzzer" that a gigging and/or studio steeler really ougta be carrying with him/her - so as to cover all bases; if the occasions arise.

Thanks, Chipper

Everytime I've seen Bobbe play, he had a Boss Tone hanging off the end of his steel. How would he do the "car wreck" without it. LOL

I wonder if it wasn't a Jordan Bosstone.

Ahh, couldn't see the previous reply when I wrote this. The Bosstones are getting scarce, but they sound awesome.

I have a pair of ShoBud or ShoTone Bosstones from around 1977 or so, they both still work perfectly. I use them sparingly every thursday night playing with the David Bromberg Jam blues band in Wilmington Delaware
When the guitars get loud and bluesey, I play 8-16 bars of straight PSG blues, then I grab it and growl.. it just freaks the kids out. Some say it has a Duane Allman-like sound. I think it just sings.
I also have an old script logo MXR+ distortion pedal, it is ok , but doesn't sing to me.

Chip, this summer in one of his weekly e-mails Bobbe recommended 5 effects for an outboard pedal steel setup...the distortion unit was the Boss DS-1.

Keeley Electronics sells a highly upgraded Boss DS-1 (Burr-Brown chips, added diode clipping switch) for $129, or will mod yours for $75. Highly recommended. http://robertkeeley.com/

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Stephan M. that's what I was kind of looking for - I remember him mentioning 5 effects and the one I couldn't remember was the distortion unit. So, it's a Boss DS-1.

I used to have that little Bosstone box that could plug directly into your steel. Jeff Neuman was using one at his seminars many years ago, and I went out and got one. But after a while, I found it on the harsh side. I was looking for a smoother, subtler distortion.

If I use effects at all, it's usually as more of a tone enhancement, rather than the full-on 'effects' capability.

I wish I'd saved that e-mail because I can't remember the chorus effect he named in it. Anybody remember?

Here's what I'm using now.

EH Holy Grail Reverb.

Danelectro CHICKEN SALAD vibrato.

Brad's Black Box.

and I'm gonna check out the Boss DS-1.

I hate to admit it, but I'm just gonna have to put some more bite in my playing if I want to keep up with these "rockers" I'm presently associated with.

I don't like it one bit. So it'either stay home and be stubborn, or bend and go out and try to fit in.

Thing is, tho, there are already 2 fine lead guitar players in this group.

This is no fun at all. But we're friends.

So what am I supposed to do? I just hate playing in this band. It's absolutely no fun.
It's torture. Unless I grab a six-string and aquiesece - give in - but then I'm wasting my good pedal steel time.

None of these guitar players even want to slow down and take some time to learn even basic "steel guitar rag" and "sleep walk".

I've had it.

Two more OD's that I like are the good ol' MXR Distortion+ and the Way Huge Green Rhino. The Way Huge is discontinued, a boutique collector's item and VERY expensive, but smooth as silk. They MAY go back into production - if so, grab one...or if you ever see one for less than $300, buy it. If you don't like it you'll still make money selling it!

The DS-1 is a little "rattier" sounding, but fun in its own way. I use mine when I'm in the mood. Actually, I have about 15 OD's I use when I'm "in the mood!".

For "Fuzz" - a different sound - there are only two I can recommend. One is the discontinued Ibanez FZ-5 "Soundtank" fuzz. I got mine for $15, and it just wails. Also very controllable.

But the Fuzz king is without a doubt the ZVex Fuzz Factory. 5 knobs, very touchy, impossible to learn without the instructions, capable of any fuzz sound under the sun and some that don't exist yet...or ever. Winking It's weirdly wonderful. Takes some guts to use one on stage, but once you get through the learning curve it's an amazing tool. In fact, ZVex makes a whole line of very weird but useful pedals. Expensive hand-made stuff, but well worth it. And I have to mention their Nano tube guitar amp - a tube amp the size of an MXR stompbox, with 1/2 watt of power. Do not be fooled - it sounds huge, fat and full, but at reasonable volume, and will even power a 4x12 cabinet!
