With the recent "Three cables wiring system by Peavey," it's ironic that I've wondered back to the Super Sustain this evening. I've got a really nice Christmas Tree amp that's been pushed aside for a while. Until this evening, I've been using the Hilton to Black Box to Nashville 112, and while that was nice, I decided to brush off the Christmas Tree, throw in the Super Sustain (with no volume pedal), and see what happened. Maybe it's because of that bit of e.q. (high end) you can add with the Super Sustain, but that JBL was pushing out some really incredible tone. For now, I've got a "new" set up.

Hi Al. The Black Box is intended to be used on the guitar side of the volume pedal....guitar to BB to volume pedal to amp. You might like it better that way.

Mike -- Ah, my late-night mistype. I had been going direct to the BB with the Hilton in the pedal patch of the 112 and/or 400. Then recently posts were indicating that their rigs sounded better with the Hilton not in that patch, but directly between the steel and amp (or after the BB).

My new smiles are coming from reintroducing the Super Sustain and Christmas Tree to my ears.

This may be a private joke or something...but what the heck is a "Christmas Tree" amp?

It's not a joke , Jim. That amp is a vintage Sho-Bud amp refered to a Christmas Tree amp because of the front panel lights...red, green and yellow.

Thanks, Mike. I'm having a blast.

Jim, the ShoBud Christmas Tree predates the Peavey Vegas in that it has two channels, one with vibrato (tremelo). It's a monster. My brother (whose name is Jim!) picked it up for me at an auction in Indiana about six years ago. He also got me an old ShoBud pack-a-seat, and inside it was a bumper sticker for "Tootsies Orchid Lounge" in Nashville. Actually, a slew of stuff was in there, including an old ball point pen from the ShoBud shop on Broadway and a "Big Muff" effects pedal. Yeah -- nice brother! There was a double-neck ShoBud at the auction, but he didn't have enough cash.

Thanks for the info - did Shobud actually make amps, or were they made by another outfit and just labeled Shobud?

Maybe both, but I don't know. I think the pedal going to my Christmas Tree says "Kent" on it.
