Ernest,

Below is a link that tells more about the 500s & the 400s. It will shine some light on the subject.

I just recently purchased a Session 500... it's my first "REAL" steel amp. Since I'm learning, it will be great...I would hate to gig with it due to the weight...it's definitely a "hernia-machine".

The EQ system in the two amps are totally different. The EQ in the Session 500 is basically the same as the EQ in a Nashville 400/1000/112, with the Parametric Mid.

The Session 400 uses a different EQ system.

Jack,

Can you elaborate on the difference between the EQ system in the Session 400 and the Nashville 112? I own both models and get much more satisfaction out of the Session 400. The 112 just isn't working for me, despite looking at setting threads and the manual settings. I thought that if I had a better handle on what was happening EQ-wise, I may be able to scrounge some tone out of the 112. As it stands, I much prefer the warmth of the Session 400.....thanks.

What makes the session 400 so heavy. If it is the wood could one make a lighter cabinet from pine wood. Would it affect the sound much?

Chris, that's a link to an EQ analysis that Brad Sarno did on the Session 400 a while back. It's very enlightening.

Chris, the key to the 112 and other Peavey amps with the Parametric mid EQ is setting it correctly. The 400 uses an active EQ but it's not the Parametric type.

With the parametric you can set whatever frequencey you want to cut or boost. Normally, with pedal steel guitars, you want to cut the approx 800hz frequency. With my Franklin and Lawrence picups (it's the same with 510 or 710) and a Hilton volume pedal, I set the frequency at 800hz and CUT approx -2. (I set the low at +9 to 12 depending on loacation) and the High and presence are set to Plus 1 to 2.

Thanks, Jack. I'll apply this to my 112 and see what happens.

I just bought a Session 400. It has Brads update installed. I'm going to test it out when I get it home. I bought it with a nice Pro II and we all know, most any amp sounds good with a Bud.

Ya, Bill, but your 'Bud will sound spectacular though the Session. I know my D-10 Baldwin does (much more so than the Nashville 112.) I set my Shift at 10 and roll back the mids to 1 or 2 and man, she's real clear then with no mid-range racket.

I think you'll find the 800hz on the Session 400 at approximately 12:00 or 1:00. Or, approximately the same position as the parametric setting on the Nashville or Session 500. I found comparible settings without visual contact with the knobs (Session 400 vs Session 500) many years ago. The knob positions were very close. I thought the Session 500 sounded a little brassy in comparison. Lots of power in the 500, but like voltage, I took the path of least resistance and stayed with the 400. But now I play through two of them? And I prefer the deep basket. Since I'm not really anybody, it makes no difference no how!

I'd say that the big difference in the two was the amount of time they spent in the repair shop. I had two Session 500's and had problems with both of 'em. I had a Session 400 and also a Nashville 400 with no problems whatsoever. I currently have a Nashville 112 which is by far my favorite steel amp to date.........JH in Va.
