Jerry Byrd used many tunings. And sometimes he has rerecoreded the same song and not always used the same tunings.

However, it is probably one of several tunings since I don't know the particular ablum you are talking about.

C6:

E
C
A
G
E
C

C6/A7

E
C
A
G
E
C#

with a possible 7th string tuned to C

A6

E
C#
A
F#
E
C#
A

In all likely hood this tuning (at least the top 3 strings) was used on "Hilo march" because it lays so well using an A major tuning.

Diatonic Tuning:

E
C
B
A
G
F
E

Today Jerry uses the C6/A7 and the Diatonic on his D-8 where one neck is not strung with the 8th string. To play Hilo March, he will quickly raise the top C (C6/A7 neck) to a C# and just as quickly retune it to a C after he has finished the song.

God bless you, JB and all the rest of you,

carl

I'm looking at J.B's hand writen arrangement for "Kilima Waltz" as I'm writing this. It's in C-6th.tuning,treble to bass E C A G E C# as is "Pa'au'au Waltz" which is played on electric steel on the C.D. but sounds fine on a reso-phonic as well.I believe you can get Jerrys arrangements from Scottys music,it's on the links page. Jerry's written arrangements are not meant to be record copies. They are just another version of the song and may not even be in the same tuning as the recording.
While trying to figure out "Estrelitta" I came pretty close using C6 but just couldn't get a few licks. Jerry told me he had used his Diatonic tuning on the record but wrote it out in C6 with a 7th string C# because most players have trouble with his Diatonic tuning.
