I plan to sell my Stereo Steel and scale down quite a bit, but not before I find a suitable replacemet. These are some of the things I am looking for:

Small, under 35 pounds or so; I will need it only for small venues; larger ones can be miked.

Mid shift, as I would use it for guitar, also; I'm not playing may gigs, and no longer need or want a hot, complex set up.

Chorus; delay/echo; reverb; distortion,
compression would be nice.

Alternatively, is there a small box with these I can set on top of the amp?

Thanks,

dave

Hello David,
I believe that I have just the amp for your application. The Nashville 112 fits most of your description................except the "under 35 pound" specification. However, I don't believe that any amplification company manufactures such a product that is designed specifically for steel guitar use. Check it out at www.peavey.com then call me should you have further questions about any of our products. I'll be glad to assist.

By the way, I suggest that you perform a "search" on the electronics section of the Forum for first hand, unbiased opinions of this model.

David,

I guess an obvious suggestion would be the Peavey NV 112 with an effects box, but why not just keep your Stereo Steel and only use one speaker? The Stereo Steel (even with an effects processor added on) is so light and delivers so much in terms of performance - you'll be very hard pressed to come up with a better package.

I know. The SS is glorious. I removed the QUAD4 from it, as I found it too innconvenient, and I installed my Ibanez DM1100 from the old days. Adequate, but no distortion capability, no compressor/limiter either. I would keep the SS if I could find a suitable effects unit for that space, one with knobs that give "more" (or "less") rather than require retrieving, programming, saving, locations, presets and all that stuff.

The Lexicon MPX 110 is a "one-rack-space" unit, with all except compression and distortion... and it does have analog knobs (with both presets, and user customized settings), instead of muli-funtion controls and LEDs.

I use the Ibanez "Tube Screamer" for distortion. I also have a NV112, and it's a great little amp for steel.

Thanks to all. I think that I'm going to go for the Peavey 112 and use my old Ibanez DM1100 with it. It worked well for me for many years with my NV 400's. I can work in the other effects at some point.

I'll be posting here a notice of intended sale of a Stereo Steel w/ BW's and QUAD 4 once I am committed to purchasing the 112. The SS has an additional input for switching between two instruments, fused speaker outputs and the bright switch that had been eliminated. Gerry was so nice to accommodate me on these items.

David, I would encourage you to spend a little more time with your fx unit before selling the rig. Programming is a pain, I know, but once accomplished, the range of sounds available is phenomenol, and I'm sure you will miss the big sound of stereo.

Most later multi-fx models do not have a wet/dry mix control, which I think is a mistake, but your SS has this capabilty along with many other steel friendly features.

I only sold my SS combo recently due to some financial distress, but I miss it terribly. I do have another stereo rig, however and hope to never be without that sound.

Best of luck though, with whatever decision you make.

Thank you for your your encouragement. I gave the Quad4 a good try, believe me, but in the end I couldn't get it to do my bidding. All I really wanted was delay, chorus and distortion, and I became annoyed that such a pricey device had no distortion, and trying to add compression to my settings was just too much for me. Sometimes more is less.

I played stereo for years, but as the venues shrank and my bass player became increasingly annoyed with my second channel anywhere near him, I stopped using it. Now the gigs are few and far apart and more intimate, and I just don't need the big guns, as nice as they are.

I hope to find a good deal on a NV112 today, and likely list the SS and some other stuff here in the next day or two.

Or, the Nashville 112 and a new Dual Deltafex digital processor. Here's a link from the Peavey website; http://www.peavey.com/products/browse.cfm/action/detail/item/115819/number/00420020/cat/94/begin/1/Dual+DeltaFex%AE+Stereo+Effects+Processor.cfm

I personally programmed presets 95 through 99 to be used with the steel guitar, however, you can program up to 99 presets for steel guitar if you wish.
