I recently bought a National double 8, probably a Grand Console. It was advertized as a 50s but it had the screw type jack. I did change the jack and this old fellow is mellow, but being curious I would like to know if it is earlier than the 50's. Is there a resource that would tell me by the serial number?

You should be able to date your National based on the serial number. This posting had a table of National serial numbers:

Great, it was made the same year I was born, better stop calling it an "old fellow". I was surprised that the screw type jack was used in the 50's. I had two late 50's Valco Supros that had the regular jack.

Gary (A):

Do you know if those numbers also apply to "Oahu Publishing" guitars?

I've got X18415 ...

Yes, that number series applies to lap steels and amps made by VALCO for Oahu, National, Supro, Airline, Silvertone, some for Gretsch, and probably a few others.
