| I've got several National D-8 steels. The nuts on all of them, are cut for 2 small gauge strings, and then a bass gauge, on up to a the high string. Can anyone tell me what these were designed to be tuned to, and maybe refference a recording that I could hear it played? Thanx, Joe |

I think they used to put the E9th "chromatic" (i.e. diatonic!) out-of-sequence strings on the bottom instead of on the top. Some pedal steelers will no doubt be able to tell you how it all started. You might try a 6-string E9 or E13 you already know and add d# and f# on the bottom: d#'f#'Bdeg#be' or d#'f#'deg#be'g#'.
It seems I've read on this forum that Joaquin Murphy used a C6 with a high b on the bottom; you might add an f to that, or an f# for diminished chords.

Well Joe.
The Book that came with my 1957 National D8 shows the tunings to be G and G Minor.
Top neck tuned as follows. G,D,B,G,F,D,B G#
HIGH TO LOW
Lower neck (minor) G,D,Bb,G,F#,F,D,Bb
High to Low.

Mine has never been tuned that way.
I use C6 and E13th
