Can I use an 8 ohm speaker in my Classic 30? The amp says 30 watts 16 or 8 ohm. It has an external speaker jack. (the main speaker is 16 ohms, so I'm thinking 16+16 ohms=8 ohms) But I am confused. On the back it says 16 ohm total minimum?? I would like to try my Commonwealth 12 inch 8 ohm speaker in place of the stock speaker.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I had a Classic 30 awhile back,and I used a 16 ohm Celestion speaker for extension. With a 16 internal and a 16 ext.,it gives you your 8 ohm load.-Jim

Hi Curt,
http://www.freeinfosociety.com/electronics/schematics/audio/peaveyclassic30.pdf

If that schematic goes with your amp, then it shows that there are two output taps on your output transformer, a 16 Ohm and an 8 Ohm tap. When you use the internal speaker alone it is connected to the 16 Ohm tap. When you connect an external speaker, both are run in parallel, and a switch in the jack switches to the 8 Ohm tap.

If you want to replace the internal 16 Ohm speaker with an 8 Ohm speaker without any mismatch, you could do this by installing the speaker but connecting it to the amp via a wire with a plug on the end and inserting it in the external jack in order to use the 8 OHm tap. And make sure to cover the two spade clips on the existing speaker leads with tape and securing them so that they don't short together.

Of course the other way is to just install the 8 Ohm speaker and accept a mismatch. Plenty has been said about this in the past. But it is best to match the impedances.

HTH,
Joe
