Bobby Ingano can get great sound effects out of his Rick Frypan. I've heard him do perfect immitations of seagulls, freight train whistles, semi-truck air horns, cows mooing and cellular phone ringing.
Anyone have any tips on how to make these sounds on the steel?

Just what you are looking for is not really clear to me.
For real bird sounds you could try taping some real birds. Ask anyone who has done some home recording. Just turn on your recording gear and you'll find out how many birds are in your neighborhood! They are very audible around here, even with the windows closed.
All recording studios have sound effects libraries on CD which would include any number of bird sounds, from hummingbirds to eagles. Your local studio could probably help you out, albeit probably for a price. Have you tried searching "sound effects" on the Web?
As for how to make bird sounds on your steel, it's just like how to get to Carnegie Hall: practice, man, practice.

| Sound effects were actually a big part of some early steelers arsenal - especially those who played vaudeville. I've seen method books from the teens to the 30's that showed how to do bird calls, chicken clucks, etc. These show up on ebay all the time. I remember Ralph Kolsiana showing me his bird call technique using the lttle finger of his right hand on his volume control. He'd replaced the standard Fender volume knob on his doubleneck with a large bakelite radio knob. As Bob said ....practice, Man! Bird & chicken sounds are there to be found for those who dare! |

| Speaking of bird calls...Martin Denny was famous for his Exotic recordings back in the fifty/sixty era. All those bird calls on those wonderful lp's were performed vocally by Augie Colon ! Just a bit of trivia. [This message was edited by George Keoki Lake on 01 June 2002 at 11:22 PM.] |

Ask Jerry Roller. He posts on other parts of the forum. He plays "Listen to the Mockingbird" on his Dobro. The crowd goes crazy every time he plays it.
