How does one convert from the old style National plug to the modern one and where can the materials be found?

If I'm not mistaken, your local Radio Shack store sells a screw-on adapter for this old style plug.

Those screw-on mini-mic plugs are nearly impossible to find nowadays. Even guitar repair shops have a tough time getting them. To convert your National you need to buy a 1/4" Input Jack. Any music store will have them in stock. If you don't want to do the conversion yourself, the store should be able to direct you to a guitar repair shop.

Thanks Max. That's it!

Goto the Switchcraft page and type
332A into the SEARCH box.

Rather than using an adapter such as pictured above, I chose to have my National New Yorker's Switchcraft plug converted to a standard guitar jack. I had Gary Brawer do the conversion for around $50 or so because the fit was very tight and I didn't want to screw anything up.

Horizon makes a cable that has that connector on one end, and a male 1/4 inch plug on the other.
