As I will be restringing my Stringmaster, I figured it a good time to get the pot #'s. There are no dates under the tuner pans. Will the numbers give me a pretty close date? The pickups are all dated june 1966 in pencil. Was this routinely done? I am hoping to confirm the date from the pots. How are the numbers translated into a date? Thanks, Ron |

Ron, If you have CTS pots on the guitar, there should be the numbers 137 on the back of the pot(s). Then there would be four numbers, for example, 6612. This would tell you that the pot was manufactured in 1966 during the 12th week. |

According to Duchossoir, who has written several books on Fender guitars - mostly geared to Strats and Teles, but gives general info on dating Fenders - Fender had date codes on pickups from around 1964 through the 70s. Several different markings were used:
64: rubber stamp in clear yellow ink
65-68: handwritten in black ink
69 onwards: back to stamped in black, red, or yellow ink
I've seen a bunch of old pickups, and the coding scheme varied from exact date (e.g., mar 14 64 or 10-7-66) to some kind of code which mentions only the year (e.g., 24 44 74, where 74 is the year).
As far as electronic source date codes go, this reference gives a pretty complete account:

Dave,
Than my dates would be right, handwritten in black, 1966.
Thanks |
