Topic: Bad luck with my cd's |

| I rented a pontiac grand-am for a small trip me and my wife went on over the weekend, I take some cd's to play, the first 3 cd's I put in started to skip bad so I just played the radio and forgot em' I got home and my cd's are now scratched, (allen jackson and martina mcbride) I actually take very good care of my cd's and I never heard of a cd player scratching a cd but 3 cd's? have anyone had experiances? I can't go back to avis as I didn't take there extra insurance policy out although I didn't really look into that to much though. |

The insurance policy I use is to leave the original CD's safe at home and burn duplicates to be used in the car and/or Walkman units.
I have had CD's stolen out of my car twice over the years, and have heard the same from many others. 'Have also had CD's damaged from misshandling.
Now if they take my CD stash (usually a CD carrier with some 20+ CD's in it), or if a CD gets scratched or lost or whatever, I don't feel a total loss (just have to burn 'em again).
I think I got this idea from another Forumite a few years back.

sorry to hear of your problem, but will
offer a suggestion, I haven't tried this
but a buddy of mine said he repairs scratched
cd's by rubbing chrome polish on them.
If they are bad anyway nothing to lose.
I would be sure to let them dry good then
be sure to wipe off all residue so as
not to mess up player.

Obviously someone before you probably caused the problem. One thing tht can cause problems in Cd players is "paper" labels. They can flake off inside the CD player and on a rental - who knows what is actually inside that can come in contact with the CD surface.
There is a "CD Doctor" type unit that will take care of scratches in most CD and DVD's. It's about 30 dollars or so.
Another issue, with CD's that are burned on a PC. Do not burn the CD-R's (don't use RW media) over 12X as many car in dash CD players won't play them (they'll skip). Also NEVER use a "paper" label - either just write on it with a magic marker or print on if it's ink jet printable there are cetain model Epson printers tht will print directly on CD's. |

| I also copy my CD's to put in the car, and for the very same reason. There was a discussion awhile back about why peole don't like the copy protected dual disc CD's that are being used- that's the reason! They won't even play in some CD players, and you can't duplicate them for use in your car. So Bruce Springsteen won't be playing Pete Seeger songs in my car... much to my annoyance. I love Seeger and Springsteen, and was looking forward to it. |

You can buy scratch removal/cleaning kits for CDs and DVDs. They work reasonably well, but not 100%. Usually a two-step process: buff the scratches out by putting the CD into a rotating cleaning unit, then clean off the buffing compound. You may have to run the CD/DVD through the unit a number of times.

| Russ I think I'll take you up one your advice yes they are already scratched so what harm can be done, Thank you jack for your post as well, I'm going to check out the local used music store to see if I can score some used replacements! maybe the cd doctor can help and thanks everyone CARTER D10 |

A few years ago my car got stolen from downtown Atlanta while I was out on the road.
When it was finally recovered, there were burns from crack pipes all along the underside of the dash, the CD player was removed, Wheel covers gone, and the thieves had driven it through the yard and into the front of a house.
And lying on the front seat was the Allison Krause CD that had been in the player.
That still cracks me up. |

My son's house was recently burgled:
They took eveything except a pedal steel instrumental cd where I was the featured 'Star'.
Go figure.....
