Topic: E9 on 8-string lap |

I have a student (Hi, Gary!) who just got his first steel guitar, an 8-string Cougar.
He loves E9 pedal sounds and would like to replicate some of that sound and tuning on his lap steel. I recommended he use the top eight strings of an E9 string set (E-F#-G#-B-E-G#-D#-F#) and get busy with bar slants.
Any of you no-pedals players ever tuned your lap this way?
Any advice?

I like... (lo to hi)
G#(or E), B, D, E, F#, G#, B, E
It is a quick change from C6/A7
A, C, C#, E, G, A, C, E

| Drew, I like what you said. You get a lot of the E9 sound out of that. Having the 1 2 3 of the scale in two places is great. And having the 7 there with the 1 2 3 on the top is really great. |

I don't use that tuning myself, but listening to Pete Grant play pedal steel licks on his ten string Zephyr is really fascinating. Pete's D tuning seems to work really well on a resophonic guitar with ten strings.

My favorite tunings were:
From hi to lo: E C# B G# E B G# E
and E C A G E C A G
On my triple neck, I used to tune the the other neck to an A high bass tuning with bass strings on the lower four.

Drew,
yes, I use that tuning (same as strings 1 through 8 of standard E9 PSG) on my quad Fender. It makes a lot of sense if you already play E9 PSG. And if your student ever wants to switch over to PSG he'll be half way there!
On another neck I have an A6 tuning which is set up exactly like "pedals A & B down, and string 2 lowered 1/2 tone" on the pedal steel E9. Those 2 tunings work well together IMHO. I recently played a four hour gig on the quad and between those 2 tunings I was able to get about 75% of what I normally get on E9 pedal steel.
...or was that 25% / 75% the other way...??
