Has anyone tried these Exciters with their steel guitar? How did you like it? |

I did a session with one about 10 years ago. It's a pleasing effect, something like a small amount of chorus and delay combined, or "double-tracking". It might be okay for an occasional song, but I wouldn't want to use it very often. |

I tried one several years back but did not find it all that useful. Ended up selling it a month or so later. |

Had one in the studio rack for years.
I used it mostly as something just barely perceptable, for body.
On vocals it could be used more strongly if desired.
I wouldn't use it in a gig rack for steel,
not enough plus top bother with the weight.
But they are cool boxes. |

When the BBE manimixer came out I no longer had any use for it. It just sits in the studio.

If an aural exciter is setup properly and used in the right situation they can be very valuable as a sweetening tool. The most logical use for them are to realign frequencies so that you can hear them in a manner very pleasing to the human ear. That means they would be utilized the best on complete mixes and vocals as well.
Back in the day of analog tape machines that ran at 15ips they were used widely to make the mixes sound more like the big machines that were tracking at 30ips and on 2 in tape.
So someone like me in the beginning got a lot of use with them being that I cut 8 and 16 tracks at 15ips on 1/2 in tape. When I used it correctly it made my mixes sound as good as the one recorded on the 2 in tape at 30ips well as close as I could ever get that is.
Today they are mostly used on vocals recorded with condenser mics that need cleaned up a little.

They make these in a footpedal version now, don't they? One for guitar and one for bass, I think. |

I own both units. And i'm not too keen on either unit for steel. I use them for recording, and live sound through a FOH. The Aphex in the picture i let my good friend Cass Broadview use to play fiddle through. She sure gets a nice sound through that thing on fiddle. But i couldn't do much with it on steel. But the Aphex IMHO is the best sounding, and best built of the two. The Aphex has the wall wart, which is kinda a draw back i guess.
