I have a 52 d8 dual pro steel that I would like to get in working condition. It has the rectangular pickups. These pickups have a plastic insulation piece that goes inside the pickup and surrounds the strings. On my steel the plastic is so old and warped that it touches two of the strings. Is this plastic necessary? Can it just be removed or does it need to be fixed? How would I go about doing this, glue?
Also, this steel was given to me. I'm a pedal player who wants to learn non-pedal. I don't know much about non-pedal steels. This d8 came to me without legs. There is a fabric pad on the bottome of the steel so I can't tell if it ever had legs. Did some of these steels come without legs or were mine removed? Thanks for any help.

Hello Steve.
The rectangular pickups would move the date on your D8 back to maybe '48-'49 (?).
I've seen a couple of these really early ones that didn't have legs - I think legs were optional in the very begining.
That plastic thing functions as a large spindle that suports the pickups' windings - that will have to be repaired or replaced. Forum member Jason Lallor might know what to do.

I had one of these very early Fender Dual Pro's with what collectors refer to as "box car" pickups. My instrument had been owned by Freddie Tavares at one time and was similar to yours in that it was a lap guitar...no legs and it never had them. I had one of the pickups reworked by Seymour Duncan of Goleta, CA. Mr. Duncan did the restoration of that pickup personally. This was several years ago and the cost for this was surprisingly inexpensive. |

Dont remove the inner core it will most likeley short the coil. It needs rebuilt. I have a form for making new cores and use cardboard like on some of the earlier models.
I have seen alot of the plastic ones do that and a few of the cardboard one but not as often.
Some of the coils are waxed and some are laquered, the laquered ones will short out if you sneeze on them. If yours is lacquered and you take out the core, you will have magnet wire falling down into the string space. |
