I have a '12 inch Fender Speaker that needs to be re-coned. Along with a slight distortion from the tear in the cone, I'm also hearing an intermittant HUMM at times when the power is on to the amp. I hooked up another speaker and the amp sounds fine so I know the electronics are OK!
Could this mean that the magnet and other speaker parts could be bad. Can these feasably be repaired. And does this mean that re-coning the speaker may not solve my problem? |

Proper reconing essentially replaces everything except the magnet and frame, so unless the slot for the voice coil is out-of-round due to a hard impact a recone should fix everything (except that or a weak magnet, and good reconers remag all speakers being reconed as well. The ones that don't I sugest avoiding).
But - hum almost never is due to a speaker problem, unless there's a short in the lead wires to the voice coil. It's really unusual. An intermittent hum means (usually) a small strand of speaker wire is loose and hitting something.
A tear does NOT mean you have to recone. Tears are very common, and there are a host of fixes for them - tissue paper combined with clear nail polish, white glue, contact cement, or silicone caulking are several ways of dealing with it. I like the polish or white glue - saturate the tissue piece, lay it over the tear and let it dry. Usually best to do both sides. Unless the tear is huge, you'll probably notice no difference in sound from a normal speaker.
I save recones for speakers that are cooked. |

I can't tell you how many years I have used speakers repaired with a black piece of electrical tape on both sides of the paper. Unless the tear is substantial just patch it. |

If you do replace the speaker, give a thought to the 12" Celestion speaker Fender puts in some of the smaller amps.... I have one (Fender DSP 90 Delux) that has abousultely amazed me in tone and the ability to fill a small venue without distortion.
