Does anyone know what the "TYPE J" means on the old A-B pots? Does it refer to the taper of the pot?

No, the "TYPE J" is just a 2-watt carbon composition pot designation, conforming to MIL-R-94. The 2nd letter from the end of the part number denotes the taper.
