Hi Kevin.... I thought about posting this in "Music". If it needs to be moved, I don't mind a bit. |

You might want to try using an Audio Technica ATM35 mic. Miniature condensor on a mini gooseneck that could clamp right onto the tailpiece. they sound very good and I've used them on banjo, violin, dobro, etc., with good results. |

Underwood makes a very nice bridge pickup for basses, you migh see if it or another of their products will work for cello.
I will add that, particularly in theatrical pit work, we have been known to attach a lavaliere mic to the tailpiece, pointed towards the neck, when the ambient noise level is such that a more distant mic might not suffice.[This message was edited by Dave Grafe on 28 February 2006 at 03:29 PM.] |

Check out SCHERTLER. http://www.schertler.com/prodotti_ing/pickups/cello.htm
I have a guitar version that I loaned to several fine cellists I play with and the word back from them was that thay loved it.

Before this gets moved.....
Definitely the Schertler. My wife is probably the best electric cellist in the world and she gets a great tone from hers.

You should also check out the David Gage "Realist" pick up.
DFesigned with David by Schecter.
Ostensibly for contra bass,
it goes under one foot of the bridge,
so it rests right on the table.
This means it is picking up the vibrations that cause the body to move, \and the body's movement together.
Works for pitz and bow equaly well.
I see no reason it wouldn't work perfectly for cello too. |

The Realist pickup from David Gage was designed by David and Ned Steinberger. It comes in sizes to fit all the bowed string instruments. I have one on each of my basses, and I know a couple of violinists who are quite happy with theirs.
