Rob Ickes new CD is called "what it is". It continues the direction of his "Slide City" CD into modern jazz and funk - this time with a jazz rythm section and sax. It's very cool to hear the dobro in the context of a groove-based funk tunes playing intricate heads in tandem with the sax. In another sense, it sure subverts your expectations to hear a resophonic come in where your brain expects to hear a Larry Carleton - style electric guitar lead. I notice that Rob Ickes & Jerry Douglas play mostly single notes ... seldom full chords or double stops on adjacent strings. I think my resophonic style must be hopelessly archaic. Sigh.

Interesting in that Tom Morrell's Dobro work also is mostly single note.

I just got Rob's new CD also, and it's great. I had never heard a Dobro in this context but I think it fits very well. I was so impressed, I bought two of Rob's previous CD's also.
