I want to record to my computer from my guitar amp. I am using a Creative Live Drive which has numerous jacks on the front panel. I normally plug my steel directly into the mic input with good results.

I would like to record through my amp and plug the amp into the Live Drive mic input, via the amp headphone output jack. My amp does not have a Record Out jack.

Is there a risk of damage to the sound card?

Thanks

No risk Joe.
You connect the headphones jack of your amp to a mini jack mono into the microphone input of your PC .You will have to adjust headphone or master output level of your guitar amp to not distord.
To use your PC as a mixer ,use the universal audio output mini jack stéreo of your PC. Get a Plug with a mini jack stéreo male and two RCA female. Use also Volum control of your PC to adjust input and output level and not distord.
How I use my PC as a mixer:
My steel multi-effect-preamp goes into the microphone input of my PC. I use my PC for playing back tracks with Band in a Box, Winamp or recording with audacity, etc. And the sound goes out to the headphone or any stéreo system through the headphones output of the PC.

If you want "stereo" or two separate channels on a PC you must use the "Line In". The Microphone input is only mono (1 channel).

A separate interface unit - not the PC sound card inputs are needed for instrument level, P.A. mic's, etc. A headphone out should work, however most headphone outputs are compensated EQ outputs, not a "flat" output - which may or may not be good for direct recording. If the amp has a "preamp" out you can also use that for recording. But NEVER connect a speaker output to the PC or some low level/power interface unit.

I was thinking about pumping my question about recording steel that I posted over the weekend and got only one resonse. I'll sneak it in here instead.

What else about recording pedal steel? Should the player use the pedal over a narrower range than when playing live, or should the engineer limit it a little to lessen the dynamic range ?
