I've got one I bought new in 1980, but frankly never liked the tone.
It's loud and clean, but no matter how I tweak it, it really does not sound as good as everyone raves about.
Question: Is there someone who I can send the chassis to that will upgrade it and/or check it out?
It's not broken, but needs a mod or two in my opinion.
(I don't want to do it myself) |

I have had several and the old Sesson 400 amps as well. It is the same circuit board as the Session 400. With the smaller cabinet it will never sound as warm as the Session 400. Still, I am looking for one as I do not need to lug around a larger amp! A 1501-4DT would help! The deeper basker can move more air. Hard to find, though.
I do filter caps on these amps for a lot of folks and it generally helps the amp out a lot. I just did one for a friend two weeks ago and he was impressed with the incres in power and tonal clarity.
I have done one of Brad's kits on a Session 400 and would recommend it. I think he is too busy with his current projects to do the kits (from what I read on another post).
Brad, if that is the case and you read this I would like to put together some of the kits for current customers in need!
I really likes the tone of the Session 400 I did with his kits a few years back! |

Try this:
Presence: 7
Treble: 6.5
Mids: 4
Shift: 10
Bass: 7.5 (This varies from 7 to 10. Just high enough to hear the boom and then back a smidgen.)
For a Session 400 I usually run the bass at 7.5. For the LTD, because of the slightly smaller cabinet resonance, a little higher.
I've set mine this way since about 1980 (and still do.)

Ken--If you do make up some kits, please e-mail me and let me know. I know I'm in need of some new filter caps too, but Georgia is an expensive shipping proposition. Could you tell me what I need and where to order? I have built a couple amps myself from kits, but I don;t know what I need for the cap upgrade, Thanks!

Brad and I talking now about what is need to assemble the kits and install them.
His help is greatly appreciated. He has done a great job on the website he created for these amps. Take a look here:
http://home.earthlink.net/%7Ebradsarno/session_400page.html
Looks like I will have a plan in a few days. I am not sure I want to offer the kits, as the amount of tech support on the phone time concerns me! Just selling the battery-less chips for user installation has taken a lot of time off my schedule due to phone support.
Right now I plan only to install the kits and also replace 7 power supply filters in in the preamp section, these are aged in these amps and need to be serviced with the power supply filters. It would take an experienced tech 1.5 to 2 hours to do this (inluding unpacking, install, clean pots, clean speaker jacks, bench test with sine wave generator/test load/O-Scope).
There will be around 24 or more components to replace. This will require removal of all knobs/nuts and then removing the circuits boards out of the amp.
