I just picked up one of these jewels. What a find!! It has a brown bakelite body (a little lighter than my T-Logo), strings through the body and a 1 1/4" horseshoe magnet pickup (non-adjustable). A very high quality sound for a "student" model guitar.

There is a cousin on Ebay now...an Ace...I think it is the same body but it doesn't have the "shoes".

I also picked up a "cosmetically challenged" Ricky 100. I stripped off the "red paint/stain" to reveal a beautiful blonde colored wood.

These two "student" model Rickys are very nice lookin' and great soundin'... like my wife says ... "The Shoes make the Outfit"!!

Rick: Is that the Academy that was just on ebay? It looked really nice, but I missed the last hour of the auction and there it went.

If you ever want to sell it...

Michael, I'm glad you missed that last hour .

Yeah, that was the one....To tell the truth...I think it sounds better than the T Logo Bakelite I have...."Snappy"

"Snappy" is a good word, Rick ("springy" is how I've thought of them). You've made a great score with this one. I think the Academy is a really underrated guitar, which in my experience sounds better than most post-war Model B's. A friend has a red one, and it's one seriously desirable instrument, great sounding and ultra-cool looking. Lucky you!

When I took the back off, the structure of the body was very interesting. Those 4 "rays" of bakelite on the underside of the neck fan out and run uninterupted to the back of the guitar where they meet up with the string through the body "special compartment".

The bridge and nut are "one with the body"... I'm lucky that no one took a file to them over the years.

Seems like an excellent energy relaying system .... I wonder why they were only made for a few years?

Too bad the Ace model didn't come with a pair of "shoes".
