I have an Evans (low voltage) preamp and am trying to run it into the "power amp in" jack of my NV 400 as well as a PX300 (powered speaker). The PX300 is quiet regardless of which of the 2 outputs on the Evans (stereo output) I use. The NV 400 has this gosh awful loud hiss regardless of the output channel. It does this even if don't use the PX300. So my assumption is the NV400 is the culprit. But if I use my PodXt into them, they are both quiet. The NV400 doesn't hiss when used normally. I hooked the "preamp out" to the "power amp in" jack on the NV400 and get no hiss.
I am stumped as to what the problem might be. I have noticed that if I remove the guitar chord from the input of the Evans, there is a crackling sound that lasts a second or two after the cord is removed. This leads me to believe it might be the preamp. But, if I just run the preamp into the PX 300 (either output) it's quiet as can be.
Oh, and I tried different cords between the preamp and power amp in.
Any ideas??

There is no volume control for the power amp section in a Nashville 400, so it's running at maximum power. That may be the issue, depending on what the output of the Evans preamp is.
Plug in a guitar cord to the Power amp In on the Nashville 400 and let the other end loose (not connected). See if you have the amp hiss there. If not then it's something with the, most likely, the gain in the Evans.
On later amps, e.g. the Nashville 1000 and 112, Peavey got smart and the "Master Gain" controls the power amp section volume level.
The PX300 is the same "vintage" as the 1000 and 2000 and I suspect it too has a Master Gain control. |

Thanks Jack. You got it. The Evans has a MAster control for each output on its back panel. I had to turn the one going to the 400 all the way down. Still a little hiss, but definately livable.
Have a Merry Christmas.

Jack,
I am using a RV-3 and a Hilton Pedal..and turning on the NV400 without a "crash" is impossible. This doesn't happen with my 112, and I wondered why.
Incidently, I can't get to make that 3 or 5 cord hookup using the preamp..for some reason. So I'm using the old standard..the
steel via Hilton Pedal via the RV-3 into the amp. When I turn everything on at once.."Crash". So I end up ..same hookup..only UNPLUG the imput from the RV-3 to and amp..turn everything on..wait..and then plug the imput into amp. What am I doing wrong? Like I said..this doesn't happen with the 112...hooked the exact same way. Thanks |

That evans is driving that Nashville pretty hard. Hard enough to make the spring reverb rattle causing that hiss.Turn the reverb all the way down on the 400. If that don't work unplug the reverb in the 400. If that works you just need like a RV-3 or something equiv. Seems like I ran into that problem B-4 & that fixed it. |

Richard, when you turn everything on at one time you can cause a "crash" sound. There is nothing wrong with the equipment it's just that everything is getting power at the same time and in the power up of the devices and amp that can happen. Power up everything except the amp first and then power on the amp and you won't get that or turn the amp input level control to zero, power everything up and then turn the input level control to where you want it. |

Turning the Master outputs down on the Evans helped quite a bit, but I still get some hiss that bothers me. Since I first posted, I tried my PodXt again into the power amps inputs, and notice almost the same hiss. I wonder if it's not the NV400.
On the NV400, by itself, I can turn both the pre and post gains all the way up and get very little hiss. And if I patch between the preamp out and power amp in with the gains all the way up, I get very little hiss.
I think I need to send my Evans preamp in for repair anyway. When I remove my guitar plug from the input, I get a crackling noise that lasts for a few seconds (whether using headphones or outputs). If I use input #2, the sound sometimes breaks up (doesn't do that with input #1)

I have occasinally experienced similar "hiss" problems with the NV400 when using the effects loop and it's been different with each different piece of inserted gear. This leads me to believe that it's a power amp input impedance-matching issue, maybe Mike Brown will show up and shed more light on the subject. |

Effects, depending on the particular effect unit, can be noisy. If you are running a "line" level effect, such as most rack type Lexicon's, T.C. Electronics, etc units in the Nashville 400 effects loop, (1) the output level from that effects loop is not at line level, but it is at the much lower "instrument" level and not enough to sufficently drive a line level device. Also with a low input to the line level device it will tend to be noisy on the output.

There you go, Jack, that explains a great deal. I have never owned a NV400 but it's what I ask for when the promoter is supplying backline gear - as a result I've never had time with one to figure out the little details like that. |
