It was really kind of fun building this Ross compressor clone from Build Your Own Clone. And it sounds just like the old ones, but has true bypass so my tone isn't affected when it's off. That's it between the Bud-Wah and the modified Rats.
If you've got the time, patience, soldering skills and good eyesight, I'd really recommend these kits. I'm looking at getting my next kit but I can't decide on which one yet! |

Cool. I have a delay sitting here waiting for me to find the time to build it. BYOC has generated a good reputation.
How would you assess your general chops at this sort of thing and how easy/difficult did you find the project? |

Jon, I'd say the kit was pretty easy to build. The online instructions are very good. The resistors don't come with a legend, so you'll have to google a resistor calculator. It was easy to enter the band patterns and determine the values. The transistors are oriented by the design on the PC board. The board is good quality and you can solder from the bottom (highly recommended). I do have some experience in this, too. When I worked for Morley as their demonstrating guitarist I did get back in the back and build some pedals. |

I have an old Ross comp. that I've had for years, and it still works great.Use it a lot on lead guitar.
I was checkin out Vintage Guitar price guide, and they say it's worth about $200..Now I know why I've always liked it..Sounds like it would be worth while to build one from a kit..
Gotta check out that site. Thanks for the heads up. PJ. |

I've built the comp, trem, delay and screamer pedals. They all sound great and are fun to build. The delay is a little noisy for the studio as are the true bypass switches . My wife likes green hammertone paint, so guess what color mine are!
I thought that the Ross clone was a little dark sounding so I started taking parts out(.1 electrolytics) until it suited me. Fun stuff! |

When laying out resistors for building a kit, it's a lot easier to just measure each one with a multimeter than trying to read the color codes, which can be hard to see, especially with 1/4 watt resistors.
I just finished building a Hamptone two channel microphone preamp from a kit, and it though it was a more ambitous project than these BYOC kits, it was a fun and rewarding experience. Now I'm looking for more stuff to build. I might have to get one of these.
