I am looking at buying a 12 inch Weber for my Carvin X-60 tube amp. Should I go with the Ceramic California,(80 watt 2" voice coil) OR, the Ceramic Michigan (100 watt, 2.5 voice coil) Both have a 60 oz. magnet. Please advise. Many thanks for your opinions! |

I was recently looking for a steel-esque speaker for a '79 Deluxe Reverb, and was concidering the Michigan (ceramic w/ aluminum dustcap) over the Cali, though the Cali came highly rec'd.
In the end I borrowed, and ended up buying, an EVM-12L that had come out of a friends Mesa Boogie amp... but that particular Weber was going to be my choice, given my line of thought for Steel needs.
I thought for basically the same price, based on the Spec's, the Michigan just plain has to be a more efficient speaker.
It would be a great A/B to evaluate a Cali vs. a Mich side by side in a coupla pairs of identicle amps (in stereo).

I have some experience with Cali 12s, I have a pair in a cab.
Its a very clean speaker, the highs are not as bright as say a JBL. Plenty of bass on the Cali, the Michigan will be more not sure you will want that.
Excellent with clean steel or telecaster. Not as good with distortion, its a little hard and fizzy as all clean speakers are.
If this is a guitar/steel do it all amp, I could also recommend a Celestion Classic Lead 80 (great for steel, clean and distorted guitar at lower volumes, will be too mushy for steel at higher volumes) or the Eminence Tonker, similar to the Classic Lead 80 but stays cleaner at higher volumes.
EVM12L is another great clean speaker as Pete says. In clean there is JBL and Black Widow also
If this is a do it all amp |
