What is the best/correct way to set the Master volume (and control your volume) when using the Tubefex as a preamp, into the poweramp ins of two Nashville 112's.
I am thinking that setting the Master volumes on the amps to ten, then controlling the volume through the Tubefex Global output would be the easiest.
What say ye? |

When you go into the "power amp in" on the back of the amp, you are taking the amplifier's preamp out of the circuit. The controls on the amp will not have any effect. You'll have to control your sound from the Tubefex. |

The master volume still works on the 112's, I would run it as high as you can,(headroom), full should be fine, and then work your input and global outs according to hiss level...which usually means they will be pretty close to the same. Too low an input--too high a global output will result in hiss to the amp. Just remember, the gain stages in the TubeFex when set correctly will be really quiet, so you need to check all the level-outs from EQ, reverb, delay, compressor, and set them high. It's also usually quieter to run your effects like a mixer and not straight thru each other (arrow right). |

Jeff has used his Tubefex for years on the road with Clint Black, which means that he has the experience when using the Tubefex in a live situation.
Thanks Jeff.

Good tips from Jeff. I will have to try that next time I get a unit in! |

I guess I'm confused. Can someone tell me exactly, step-by-step, how to hook the tubefex up to the Nashville 112, and then exactly, step-by-step, how to adjust the controls on both the 112 and the tubefex?
Thanks,

Allen, there are a few ways to connect the Tubefex to the Nashville 112 amplifier. It can get confusing unless you know what is happening within the various configurations.
#1-Connect your guitar to the volume pedal, then from the volume pedal to the input of the Tubefex. Then connect from the Tubefex to the #2 input on the amplifier. The confusing part of this is that you will be using both equalizers of the 112 and the Tubefex(if you program eq's in the chain of effects).
#2-Connect from your guitar to the input of your volume pedal, then from the volume pedal to the input of the Tubefex. From the Tubefex to the POWER AMP INPUT on the rear panel of the 112. Using this configuration, you would be using the programmed equalizers in the Tubefex and not the 112. The controls on the frontpanel of the 112 would be inactive.
#3-Connect from the output of your guitar to the input of the Nashville 112 amp. Then, using two more instrument cables, connect from the PRE EQ SEND on the Nashville 112 to the input of your volume pedal, then connect the additional cable from the output of the pedal to the PRE EQ RETURN jack on the amp.
Then, using two more instrument cables, connect one from the POST EQ SEND to the input of the effects unit and with the second cable, connect from the output of the effects unit to the POST EQ RETURN jack.
By using this patching procedure, you will obtain the maximum performance from the Nashville 112 and Tubefex. Please consult the Tubefex operating guide for proper settings.

Thanks Mike. This makes things a lot clearer. I was somehow mixing the options up. I will try #3 and see what I think. |

Allen, it takes a few cables, but in my opinion it is the best way to use the Tubefex with an amp. |

Jeff,
Could you tell us how you hook up the TubeFex with the Nashville 112?
1. Steel -> volume pedal -> TF -> input 112
2. Steel -> volume pedal -> TF -> power amp in
3. Steel -> volume pedal -> 112 preamp in ->effect send-> TF -> effect return
4. other?
I always experience hiss and I try to get the gain just before clipping after the various effects. Any tip might help.

Mike layed it out very clearly..It depends on whether you intent to use the pre in your 112's or not. When I ran the TubeFex's, I ran Steel-VP-TFex-Amps(I used both NV1000 & PX300..and NV112's w/Black Widows depending on venue. I always ran to the amps PWR IN on rear panel. I always ran the amps full out, and used the compressor,CM, first in all chains(presets) in the TFex. I would program each song in our set according to tempo, reverb & delay changes, and added effects(chorus, flanger, etc.), then using the PFC(midi foot controller), I could just go from song to song by name & number in the set...very handy, and I must say, I miss the ease of this set-up live lately.
I also really like moving the speaker cones--I play loud 'cause I feel I get the best real tone this way, and I never had a problem with noise. Good cables are a must. I use Bill Lawrence cables and pickups..definitely helps.
One more note..I actually only stopped using the TubeFex's because they were discontinued, and keeping all of mine in service on the road might become an issue if I needed a replacement locally, but this last year has been fine using just the NV112's. Very fine amps from Peavey...I've always loved the sound of 12's, as long as there were lots of 'em...I play reeeal loud, remember? |
