Last evening I was able to play with a small graphic EQ which I thought helped my sound. I am looking for the best way to hook up a graghic EQ. I have a Nashville 112 amp and I use the Pre EQ patch with comes from my effects unit. I went from my volume pedal to the graphic EQ and from that to the amp. Is there another way to hook one up that may be better? Am I defeating the purpose of using the Pre Eq patch on the amp while using a graphic EQ? I am looking for the best way and I am no electronic genius by no means so I figure this is the best place to get help.

If you're using a combo amp insert the EQ after the pre-amp, preferably before the reverb unit.

If you're using a rack rig put the EQ directly after the preamp and before all other processing.

Dave G., what's the reasoning behind putting the EQ first in a rack? I have mine (stereo 15-band) after a stereo compressor, with the thinking that the compression takes some of the 'boom' out of the bass notes and relatively boosts the treble - which I then EQ. Plus, I sometimes have a volume-sensitive tube overdrive/distortion hooked up early in the chain, and it would sure freak out the EQ? All before reverb & delay of course.

I did purchase an EQ and the booklet shows to go from the guitar to the effects and then to the EQ and then to the amp. When I hooked it up I have a small hum when I turn the volume on the amp. It does have a ground lift but it did not help when I put in in a different position. I will get the opportunity to play Saturday night outside of my house so I can give this unit a test ride. It definitely makes a difference in the sound. Just trying to get it set has been a challenge but with a little time I think I can have the bugs worked out.

David M., I put the EQ (an Audio Arts 4100 4-band parametric) first primarily because it also contains the preamp, but I recommended the graphic go there so as to send the EQ'd sound of the instrument (hopefully the desired tone of the day) through the rest of the toys.

Another completely valid school of thought is that the EQ should be the last thing before the power amps, thus adjusting the tone of the total processing, rather than the guitar only - that's the way we do it with sound systems in general.

Bottom line is, what works for you works for you.
