I went ahead and bought a late 1960s Standel Super Imperial and would like to gig it out. Should I upgrade to a grounded power cord? Also, I know that some of the components are covered with resin but are there any caps or filters, etc. that can or should be serviced? I heard there is a repair guy in LA that knows the scoop on Standels.
Any other advice is appreciated.
Thanks, Dave |

I put grounded power cords on mine -- for what that's worth.
Some of the amps had potted modules (sealed in plastic resin); others did not. Neither of mine has anything you can't get to for service.
I believe it was mostly the older tube models that Mr. Crooks was paranoid about having his designs stolen and copied. He encased parts in plastic and in some cases scratched off id markings on components to help avoid others copying his stuff. If he had to repair it, he knew what was there and would replace the entire module.

Tim Maag or Tim Magg is the Standel guy just south of Los Angeles. He worked on my 1970 Emmons (Standel) amp a few years ago and did a great job and found a pair of Altec 416s to put inside.
Very reasonable and dropped off one week, picked up the next.
My last number for Tim was 714 447-8364. I am pretty sure it is still 714. He is in Fullerton, or Brea. |

Thanks Chris. One of the best sounding rigs I've heard was an old Bud going through a 1970 Emmons (Standel) with a D130.
The Standel website has schematics posted, even for the secret modules so I may have the work done locally.
thanks everyone!
