I've been working on a strategy for flying with gear, since I've never done it before. I was hoping to rent an amp for a show at the CC Club but the guitarist, who lives in Austin says I should just use his Deluxe Reverb. Do they mic amps there and would the Fender Deluxe Reverb do the job? The band is pretty loud. I feel like I would need more. How much firepower do you local steelers bring there?

Thanks, Dave

For a Pedal Steel; you will need more than the Deluxe at the Continental Club. Yes they Mic. everything; but it's still pretty hard to hear the deluxe without it breaking up; but if you playing a non-pedal; it should be no problem.
Also depends alot on what kind of Band you play with and how their volume is; especially the monitors...as the monitor volume, depicts the whole back line volume on stage.

Thanks Ricky. I'll be playing pedal steel. The singers in this band usually tell the sound men to turn the monitors (vocals) up to where it starts to feedback, and then roll back a notch. Or they tell them to turn it up until you see blood dripping out of there ears. Some sound guys that worked with us in CA have said the monitors are sometimes louder than the house! Makes things difficult for the steel player. I always wear earplugs with these folks.

Thanks for the tip. I'll rent a twin or I should be able to find a PV steel rig somewhere in town. No?

Funny. Right after I posted I checked my email and the singer says the CC has house amps & drums. Any chance you know what's available?

Thanks, Dave

Dave
The house amp for the CC is a blackface Super Reverb. Great guitar amp, but not that good for steel in that club. Best to rent a Twin Reverb if possible, or contact Music Makers to see if they have a Peavey that's suitable. Also check Rock And Roll Rentals on Oltorf St at Lamar. 512-447-5305.

Thanks Herb. I may just tough it out with the Super and the Deluxe together since it's not really a pure country band. It's more rock oriented and a little break up would be OK for their sound, plus it's all about the singers and lead guitar. I'm there so they can call themselves a "country" band.

I'll have a night or two off while I'm there so be sure and let me know where you guys are playing.
Thanks again guys! Dave

WEll when are you here Dave?? I play almost every night somewhere; so in order for me to tell you where I am a particular night, I have to know what night(s) your inquiring about?
Yes I actually played through that Super Herb speaks of and a deluxe the same time and it was OK; but then again I play Country Music with country singers; so I haven't a clue what it would be like with some Rock Heads..ha....and If I ever sat down on a stage with someone that had the monitors that loud; I would immediately pack my stuff and head on out. That is also why I still have very good hearing; as I just won't play or listen that loud anymore.
I feel for ya.
(oh and I won't be coming out by the way..ha...)

I'm there at the CC Thursday October 6 but I guess it's a happy hour show or something so I think I'm done early. They're trying to get a Saturday show somewhere else but nothing is confirmed yet. We're not playing Friday. I'll be leaving Sunday AM. Do you have anything with Gary Claxton that weekend? I'd like to hook up up with him. We used to play in the Bay Area years ago. Also, Keven Banford said you might play with him when he moves to Austin. Is he there yet?

I have a feeling this will be my last show with The Mother Truckers. I doubt they'll have any trouble finding musicians in Austin to go on the road with them. I'll just point the monitors back at them and put my earplugs in one last time and make the best of it like I always do.....and I wasn't even gonna ask you to come out anyway Ricky! So there!

Thanks, Dave

Well as far as I know right now; Gary will be with Heybale on Sunday Night at Continental Club> other than that; I don't know Pal.
I'm sure I'm somewhere that week...but I never book more than 2 weeks in advance; so that I'm able to pick and choose the best payin' gig....ah...ha..
Haven't heard from Kevin B. and that's awefully persumptuous of him to think I'll be playing with him....ha....he'll have to get in Line and have at least 200 bucks in his pocket per gig....ha > Just kiddin'; I'll pick anywhere/anytime with Kev.

I'll probably do a "Who's Playing In Austin" post on the forum to see what's going on.

Continental's Super Reverb Caveat:
I have played telecaster through that amp last march at our SxSW gig. That super is one of the earliest breaking up super's that I have played through; not much louder than a deluxe...

Don't know if you read my post from earlier in the summer, Dave---I am relatively inexperienced at playing through a sound system. I was playing on an outdoor stage and I figured that since they were mic'ing my amp it would be fine to bring my Deluxe Reverb. I planned for a best case scenario instead of a worst case scenario. I figured that the system and the sound man would be good and I would monitor myself off the wedge and everything would be aces. We3ll the system was marginal, the sound guy was unhelpful and I couldn't hear squat through the monitor. It turned out that if I wanted to hear myself I would have to turn up my amp. But the Deluxe Reverb sweet spot is a real narrow band. I ended up having to crank the amp and that meant that my steel was way gravelly over the mains. (I am also not a clean freak but this was pretty over the top.)
This amp now only does small rooms. I otherwise consider it a must to carry something that can cut the stage volume and serve as my monitor.

I was just in town and stopped at Guitar Center for some strings and they had a used (but very clean) custom shop Vibrasonic reissue for $799, I bet they'd rent that & it should do the trick.

If you're there on the weekend don't miss the early Saturday afternoon happy hour at the Continental with Redd Volkaert on guitar, he'll blow your mind and often has somebody excellent on steel (such as Ricky Davis or occasionally Cindy Cashdollar.)

You could probably find a Nasville 400 somewhere. Austin Music Lab might have one for rent. The N400 would definetly cut through anything. I've played CC many times with that amp.
