Acoustic Guitar Magazine has a really nice article on Kelly Joe Phelps style complete with tab examples with real-audio demos and verbal explanation from Kelly Joe. He gets a lot of musical mileage from simple ideas played exceptionally well. All examples are in open D tuning (DADF#AD low to hi).

Thanks Andy. I've never heard this guy before, and I really like what I'm hearing!

I saw KJP in Edinburgh last month. Phenomenal playing. very emotional. Didn't play his resonator, though (I think he uses a square neck triolian sometimes)

He's a phenomenal musician. Most of his lap steel playing is done in open D on a converted Gibson acoustic guitar. He was formerly a jazz bass player so he combines deep knowledge of harmony with a reall emotional, gut bucket approach to traditional materials. He has an instructional video out on Homespun that's quite good.

Had the priviledge of seeing KJP perform in Chicago last year, and he's coming back this year in April (3 days shy of a year later-to the date!). He's a phenomenal player and soulful singer. Long, rambling tunes that read like novels. His approach to lapstyle playing is fantastic, and his standard guitar fingerpicking is topnotch. A fiery performance, well worth the price of admission. If he comes to your area, check him out. In the meantime, pick up a copy of ShineEyed Mr Zen, and Sky Like a Broken Clock (no lapstyle playing on that one 'tho, but wonderful fingerpicking, sparce band accompaniment).
