I just had my main box of mechanic tools stolen from the back porch where I live. I don't have a garage and the box weighed about 100 pounds so moving it around wasn't all that convenient. Even with it chained to two floor jacks and a compressor, they made off with the box and the lock! That's a 3 drawer Craftsman box complete with everything I could get in there. As much music equipment as I have in the house I need something more than an alarm system that takes 30 minutes for the cops to get here if they do get the call. I would like to have an electronic eye like the ones the Kroger stores used to have to open the doors as you walk in. If I could arm that eye when I turn out the lights and have it turn on a really loud alarm and maybe the lights I think I could put a stop to this stuff or maybe catch them, God help them. Where can I get something like this and does it even exist?

Frank, I have an ADT Alarm system for my home. It can be programmed for about any mode you would want, including Fire. It is a subscription service and is monitored to call Police or Fire if you are not home when the protected security zone is violated.

The best security system I've found is the 90 pound Pit Bull in my yard.

Prior to moving in our new house seven months ago, my wife and I lived in the house she grew up in. The neighborhood has one of the highest crime rates in our city. I was still traveling with a band when we married so I got a German Shepherd to stay with my wife while I was gone. For reasons I won't get into, by the end of the first year of marriage we had four German Shepherds. In the 5 1/2 years we lived there, more than 30 homes were burglarized, but not ours.

Two have passed away, but we still have two. Everyone in our new neighborhood refers to me as "the man with the dogs." They are loving members of our family, they protect my wife and one year old son, and they won't allow anyone they do not know within a few feet of my son. Here are a couple of pics.

The value of an alert watch-dog as a supplement to a security system should not be overlooked!

I had to travel out of town over the weekend and got hold of something that just might do the job. It's called Driveway Patrol, a wireless system with batteries that should do what I want hopefully. I don't want a dog to chew this guy up and I've had the ADT security system. I guarantee you I can get into your house and be gone with your stuff before the cops ever get there with an ADT system or any of the others out there. Just set off the alarm yourself and then be the burlar. Go in and just start taking stuff out and see how long it takes for the cops to come. Just a waste of money as far as I'm concerned. I want to catch this guy myself and I'm not calling the cops. Hopefully nobody will read about me in the paper but after two of these tool boxes being stolen around here it's time to take break this guy from his line of work.

Frank,
Be careful if you approach burgulars or theives, most of them are on dope. I knew a guy that was a mechanic and he heard someone messing with his van (full of tools), he went outside to run them off and they killed him.

Get a dog (or a couple of dogs), my dog is old and blind and I bet you wouldn't get out of my house with nuthin' but a few bites.

this is good stuff..
My neighbor across the street just installed full outdoor lighting..it covers his driveway, back of his house and front of his house..it is not offensive at all..actually it looks nice at night..

I believe he also has some motion detectors in specific area's.

Clearly if anyone is looking to RIP anyone off, they will choose my house over his just due to the lights alone..

I have been contemplating some lighting and motions sensors as well.

Our house is on Alarm , but still the outside is suspect for anyone who may feel like wandering around...

I also looked at a small 38 ( 2" barrel) this week...

all this and there has never even been a break in around our neighborhood..but there is always a first time...and I hope it ain't me...

A friend with a Motorcycle Shop had a wonderful German Shepard that he raised from a pup.

Harley (the dog's name) had a house in the lot, which was surrounded by a large chain link fence.

My friend got a call from the burglar arlam company one night, and responded. The police were already there. The fence had been cut, two Harleys (the bikes) were missing, and the dog was shot dead.

This 300 lb guy still cries about the dog.

I don't know the solution, but it you're plan to take action into your own hands, don't mention it to anyone, especially in a public forum. The bad guys have lawyers that are no better than them.

in these parts, burglars rapidly try to neutralize electric & fone lines.
so an autonomus power source is indispensable
i find alarms are nerveracking & get everyone uptight, including me
better have yer earplugs on
i prefer the option of turning it on at any given time
how ?
by remote control
yep - get wired & go wireless too
Motion detectors are useful triggers for all kinds of things
Lighting, Recordings, PAs or Hifis, Sounds
Dialing up some good buddies &/or the cops
Video Cameras - film it & hide the cameras well -
turning on the lawn sprinklers, closing the gate, opening the doors to let the sharks in the pool & eventually an alarm too
lettin' the thieves feel like it's gonna be easy is my first approach
here in France one gets locked up for booby trappin' his home & usin' firearms
Darn shame huh ? if unlike me, you're allowed to carry a piece & use it
well more power to ya
Jewelers in England have been puttin' tarantulas at night w: their gems
Dogs have proved themselves to be man's best friend fer ages
maybe some rattlers from PK or Farris ?
shucks how bout a leopard ?
Bee's are great
can neutralizin' a thieve's vehicle get you in hot water ?
if it does you still got your cell fone
that's yer second remote control
follow the sobs & call the law if so far you have'nt chosen to do so
i'll try to get back w; Plan B : when one is not at home

What you are talking about is called an "annunciator", the same thing that rings a gong when you walk into a store.

Something to consider before you spend money on an annunciator is how much damage a guy has to cause before he qualifies to be annunciated.

You can get lots of insight from Secrets of a Superthief by John MacLean (ISBN: 0425056457). For instance, it's surprisingly easy to get into a house if you don't mind causing some damage, and how many ways there are to get in without opening a door or window.

Oh, and if you do buy an annunciator, every burglar in the country knows to look for the control box in the first cabinet nearest where you park the car. Don't put it there.

Frank..i live in a very small town, i thought i knew everyone here..i guess not..but i had a new gas grill taken from right under my bedroom window..it was too hot to put away..so i figured i would get up in a bit and put it away...went out an hour or so later..gone. anyway i am thankful for you..that it wasn't your steel..i hates a thief..maybe someone who works for a security service can weigh in here for ya..most thiefs are ambitious, it's because they never have to do any honest work for anything...oh..and nice doggie Gene, i see he's right on the job...

I've got this new device up and running and it's so simple and inexpensive too. I've tested it out and it works like it should. I do understand what you are saying about the thieves lawyers Joey and will keep that in mind. I just want to catch this guy on my property and have just a minute or two with him (in self defense of course). He could be the same one that got be before and he'll never stop until I stop him. I'll never own another alarm system in the house that calls the cops. It's just a waste of money and I urge anybody here to test their system to see just how much you can get out of your house with before the cops show up. It's enough to persuade you to cancel the companys contract with you if you can.

A friend in law enforcement once told me to be sure the first thing you tell the police is, "He threatened to kill me and my family", and be sure he can't dispute your claim. If you don't want to go that route, have plenty of insurance.

Ganey those are precious pictures of your babies. Gene that may be the funniest thing I've ever seen. A dog that keeps that up for very long is bound to have some back trouble. Among other things.
