Some of my test equipment is getting old and I am wanting some new stuff. I need some suggestions on a new 0-scope, signal generator,and frequency counter. Please confine your suggestions to the Mouser catalog and the Jameco catalog. If you have bought any of this stuff recently, and like it, I'd like to know about it before I buy anything?

Keith,will you be working with audio frequencies only ? I told you sunday that have an extra dual trace scope I don't use. I think the vertical response is flat to 200kz. I'll give it to you if it will work for you.
You have to be careful buying a freq counter. I have several that work up in the megahertz ranges(RF). They do not work good at all for audio frequencies. I have one that I will check out and see if it will work for you. You may have to remind me, as I am old and senile....You wouldn't know anything about that. I think I told you that I do not have any variable audio generators.

John, I will take you up on the 0-scope, but I want to pay you something for it, or trade for a pedal. All I am needing is up to 20K HZ. Beyond that we go into what dogs hear. I doubt that most people can hear past 15K HZ if that far. What I use the frequency generator for is to trace out a sign wave and check for my soldering mistakes. I may just build a simple sign wave generator. I got one of my two old 0-scopes working and was so happy, and proud of myself. I went back and looked at it an hour later and the screen was blank. You are not old and senile. I listened to the CD you gave me at the Show and you are still a great steel guitar picker, and a great standard guitar picker. I was glad we got to visit with our former band member, Gary Adkins. If we were younger we might get with Gary and Eddie and Burn Some Bridges! Or--Lock Horns!

Kieth,
I've had real good luck generating sine waves with my computer and burning them to CDs.
I've did sweeps, standard levels, white and pink noise, etc.
If you don't have the capability, I'd gladly send you a cd

Jay

edidted to add:
Using a portable cd player, you can test two pedals at once!

Thanks Jay. Give me some more information on hooking up the output of a CD player for testing? This sounds interesting. The CD sign wave sounds interesting, tell me more how that works? Then again, I suppose I could hook the output of a CD to a circuit tester. Then have the other end of the tester hooked to an amplifier and speaker. That way I could use Bobby Flores'new CD, and listen to number 11 on the CD: "How Long Is Forever This Time" all day long! I just love Bobby Flores singing and fiddle playing. John, I got to thinking. You said your O-scope was flat to 200K HZ. I know you work on Radio Frequency stuff. I am taking flat to mean audio stuff from zero to 20K suff won't pick up, and will be flat on the scope as in a line. Is that correct? If so, the scope would not work for me.

Keith, the frequency response is flat, meaning there is no signal attenuation of signals from DC to 200,000 Hz. This scope will work fine. It is also a dual trace scope (2 inputs). You can monitor the input and output of a circuit, such as a preamp, similtaneously. ......JD

Keith,

You have restricted yourself to two suppliers but they don't always have the best prices . For example: a scope I've been looking at is:

Jameco#: 229358
MFG: INSTEK CORP.
MFG#: GDS-820S
PRICE: $1,259.95
======================
That same scope from:
http://web-tronics.com/inco15distos.html

GDS-820S1+
$899.00ea.

Your Savings: $US 360 before tax
Less my 10 % and you are still saving.
==========================================
Another example:

PROTEK Model 6510 Real Time 100MHz Dual Trace Analog Oscilloscope (6510) Only $499.00!

(That's hard to beat for a general purpose scope)

I made my own test tone CD's using Syntrillium's CoolEdit software. I use an older version of Smaart Pro software for the analysis end of the business.
